6/12/2023 0 Comments Grendel beowulf michael morpurgo![]() When King Hrothgar and his people were terrorized by the monster, Grendel, Beowulf sailed to Zealand with fourteen warriors in order to pay his father’s debt. ![]() The Danish king Hrothgar generously paid the weregild, and had Ecgtheow swear an oath. Ecgtheow had previously slain a man from another clan, and apparently, because the victim was from a prominent family, the weregild ( man price – a value placed on every being and piece of property, that had to be repaid if property was stolen or someone was injured or killed as restitution by the offender) was set too high, and so Ecgtheow was banished and had to seek refuge among the Danes. In this Germanic myth, Beowulf was the son of king Ecgtheow. ![]() ![]() Later the poem was named after the Scandinavian hero Beowulf, and the author was titled “The Beowulf Author”. The story of Beowulf is a retelling based on the original Old English, untitled poem, written by an unknown author. ![]()

Those moments were so precious I couldn’t get enough of them and all I wanted was for them to be happy. ![]() Even though she never went into detail, never actually let them say that they loved each other it was still palpable in every single moment they shared together. What I loved the most was how she managed to convey Achilles’ and Patroclus relationship though. This book was just so beautiful! So, so damn beautiful! Madeline Miller definitely has a way with words and I loved how this story was written: Poetical with a lot of mythological facts and with so many details that it succeeded to make this a more than just intriguing journey. Sections marked “Phoebe” detail Will’s conjectures about her life mixed with bits of what might be her own account, copied from a notebook he finds. It makes sense - he’s trying to put a narrative together in order to understand the events that have occurred to and around him. “She would sit apart from this reveling group,” he hypothesizes. “They’d have gathered on a rooftop,” he assumes.
